Discover the Serengeti Hot Air Balloon Experience

What is a Serengeti Balloon Safari?

A Serengeti balloon safari is an early morning adventure where you ascend in a hot air balloon to glide over the Serengeti National Park. The experience in the air typically last about one hour, providing a unique vantage point from which to observe the park's incredible landscapes and diverse wildlife

Why Choose a Balloon Safari?

While traditional game drives are thrilling, a balloon safari offers an entirely different perspective. The serene and silent flight allows you to observe the Serengeti’s vastness and its intricate ecosystems in a way that’s impossible from the ground.

Best Time to Go

The Hot Air Balloon ride is a great experience year-round and each season provides a different landscape to view. Late June to September is generally when the weather is at its most stable and there is less chance of the Hot Air Balloon being cancelled due to inclement weather.

Booking Your Safari

Booking in advance is crucial, as balloon safaris are very popular, and spaces are limited. While you can book while you are in camp, we strongly recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Prices range from USD$500 to USD$600 per person, depending on the season and the provider. If your Hot Air Balloon ride is cancelled due to unsuitable weather, you will be provided a chance to reschedule or if not possible a full refund.

The Experience: What to Expect

  • Early Morning Start: Your adventure begins before dawn, with a wake-up call around 4:30 - 5:30 AM. You’ll be transported to the launch site under the cover of darkness.

  • Pre-Flight Briefing: Upon arrival, you’ll receive a safety briefing as the balloon is prepared. Watching the inflation of the balloon is an experience in itself.

  • Takeoff: As the sun begins to rise, you’ll gently lift off the ground. The feeling of weightlessness and the stunning sunrise are unforgettable.

  • Flight: For about an hour, you’ll drift over the Serengeti, observing animals from above. The pilot will vary the altitude, offering different perspectives—sometimes skimming just above the treetops, other times soaring high for a panoramic view.

  • Landing: Landings can be smooth or a bit bumpy, depending on the wind. After touching down, you’ll celebrate with a traditional champagne toast in the bush, followed by a hearty breakfast.

Wildlife Viewing

The Serengeti is renowned for its wildlife, and a balloon safari provides an opportunity to see it from a unique angle. You might spot lions lazing in the early morning sun, herds of elephants moving gracefully across the plains, or even a cheetah on the hunt. During the Great Migration, the sight of thousands of wildebeest and zebras traversing the savannah is nothing short of spectacular.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Clothing: Dress in layers, as the morning can be chilly but warms up quickly after sunrise.

  • Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy shoes are essential, as you may have to walk through rough terrain after landing.

  • Camera: A good camera with a zoom lens is highly recommended to capture the incredible wildlife and landscapes. Binoculars are also handy for spotting animals from a distance.

Health and Safety

Balloon safaris are generally safe, with experienced pilots at the helm. Ballooning is not suitable for pregnant ladies, people with mobility or health conditions (heart conditions, brittle bones, neck or back conditions). Passengers must be able to bend their knees, hold on to rope handles with both hands for take-off and landing and be able to climb into and out of the basket. Children under 7 are not permitted. Always inform your pilot of any health concerns before the flight.

Conservation and Sustainability

Many balloon safari operators in the Serengeti are committed to conservation and sustainable tourism. The flights are designed to have minimal impact on the environment and wildlife. A portion of the fees often goes towards conservation efforts in the Serengeti, helping to protect this incredible ecosystem for future generations.
